Dress modestly in town (shoulders and knees covered), ask before photographing people, and never climb on, touch or scratch rock carvings and tombs — the inscriptions are thousands of years old and fragile. Take all litter with you.
Wind and water shaped Jabal AlFil over millions of years, carving an arch beneath a mass of red sandstone until it looked like an elephant standing in the sand. The rock is said to be around 50 metres high.
It became one of AlUla's best-loved sights as the area opened to visitors. A low-key lounge area with seating set into the sand around the rock lets people sit and watch the sunset and the night sky.
