  • Kabsa

    Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's best-known dish: long-grain rice cooked with a warm spice mix, tomato and stock, piled on a large platter and topped with chicken or lamb, fried onions, nuts and raisins. Often shared from one tray.

  • Saudi coffee (gahwa) and dates

    Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Light, golden Arabic coffee brewed with cardamom (and sometimes saffron or clove), poured in small handleless cups and always served with dates. Offering gahwa is the first gesture of Saudi hospitality — hold the cup in your right hand, and gently shake it when you have had enough.Read more

Culture

Kingdom Centre's distinctive "bottle-opener" silhouette appears on souvenirs and in Riyadh's skyline photos. The surrounding Olaya district is the city's main shopping and business area, busiest late in the evening.

History

Kingdom Centre (Kingdom Tower) opened in 2002 in the Olaya district and quickly became the symbol of modern Riyadh. Its tall, tapering form ends in a large parabolic opening at the top, spanned by a steel-and-glass Sky Bridge about 300 metres above the street.

The tower holds offices, a hotel, apartments and a shopping mall in its base. Visitors reach the Sky Bridge by high-speed lifts, then a second lift, for a 360-degree view across the city's grid of avenues and towers.

Best time to visit

Any time of year; sunset and after dark are the most popular, when the city lights stretch to the horizon.

How to get there

In Olaya: Kingdom Centre stands on King Fahd Road and Olaya Street, central Riyadh. Taxis and ride-hailing apps drop at the mall; the Riyadh Metro Blue Line runs along Olaya Street. Sky Bridge tickets are sold at the counter in the mall — check current hours and prices there or online.

Getting around

  • Follow signs inside Kingdom Centre Mall to the Sky Bridge entrance.
  • Allow time for queues at busy evening hours and on weekends.

Travel tips

  • Not ideal for those uncomfortable with heights — the bridge has glass walls and moves slightly in the wind.
  • Opening hours can change, and the bridge may close in bad weather or for maintenance.
  • Combine with shopping and dinner in Olaya.
